Session 6-C

The Five Pillars of Data Democratization: Learnings From Born-Digital and Incumbent Firms

← Back to Agenda

Data has historically been in the hand of a few experts holding all the privileges (e.g., access, ownership, trainings). To enable data-driven innovation, firms have started democratizing their data so that more employees can work with it and extract value from it. This presentation summarizes research insights on data democratization initiatives at born-digital firms (e.g., AirBnB, Uber) and compares them to approaches taken by incumbents. We derive a framework composed of five enablers for data democratization: (1) Broaden data access, (2) Stimulate data use with self-service, (3) Level up data literacy, (4) Create data communities, and (5) Promote data value.
