Melanie Krause is the first Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Chief Data and Analytics Officer (CDAO). In this role, Melanie has a global view of IRS operations as she coordinates research activities and data initiatives to advance areas of strategic importance to the Service. This includes using artificial intelligence and other advanced analytics to support new and expanded customer service and enforcement initiatives, developing strategies for addressing emerging issues and better measuring the full impact of IRS budget and actions on compliance. In addition, Melanie oversees Research, Applied Analytics and Statistics (RAAS) and has an active role on multiple IRS governance bodies, including serving as co-lead of the Data and Analytics Strategic Integration Board (DASIB). She was also tapped to serve as Acting Deputy Commissioner for Services and Enforcement from November 2022 to March 2023, and served as the IRS’ Lead Delegate for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s proceedings on Tax Administration 3.0: The Digital Transformation of Tax Administration.

Prior to joining the IRS in 2021, Melanie served as the Assistant Inspector General for Management and Administration with the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General (VA OIG). In this capacity, she was responsible for overseeing the VA OIG business functions, including overseeing the technology and data analysis teams. Melanie also has more than eight years of experience conducting and leading oversight of federal programs with the Government Accountability Office, detailed to the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, and in multiple roles with the VA OIG prior to being appointed as Assistant Inspector General. In addition, despite leaving clinical practice in 2009, Melanie maintains an active license as a registered nurse. She holds bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
